How Sofas are Becoming More and More Comfortable

It may not seem like it at first glance, but sofas have evolved over time mainly towards new ideas of home comfort.

Sometimes, at a careless glance, many sofas may look similar to each other, but this central piece of furniture in the home changes shape and structure over time. These changes can be attributed both to the intuitions of designers and companies and to the changing living habits of those who inhabit domestic spaces.

A continuous change over time that, while from one season to the next may seem minimal and imperceptible, when one goes to compare models decades apart the differences become much more obvious.

Ever different formats have appeared, often hybridising with each other, bringing new ideas for comfort into the home. In addition to this, another fundamental shift concerning volumes can be found in the dimensions: if the width of a sofa must adapt to the space it will fit into, the height and depth of the seat, on the other hand, affect the way we sit.

Another aspect that is more invisible but equally fundamental is the structure of a sofa. From this point of view, there have been many changes over the years, and in particular in the last few years it concerns the upholstery. Those made of expanded foam brought about a momentous change in the 1970s.

Today, the great work of manufacturers on sustainable and recycled materials meets with memory technologies. Then there are details that add comfort such as the choice of fabrics, design and accessories.
