It’s not about material possessions or extravagant experiences, but rather finding joy in the simple moments of life.

Hygge is a Danish word that literally means fun, but in the Scandinavian country in a broader sense hygge identifies a lifestyle. The term dates back to the 19th century, comes from the Germanic word hyggja and means ‘to think or feel content’. There are no exact translations of this term, the concept is very profound.

Hygge is a special atmosphere, the intimate and pleasant feeling of well-being, of protection that one feels when one is safe at home, surrounded by the affection of loved ones. More than in words, understanding is in the images: a cup of tea in front of the fireplace, the pleasure of a good book, a blanket. Hygge is valued by the Danes, considered one of the happiest people in the world, as the basic component in the pursuit of happiness.

This concept is considered a key element for happiness: some universities in the United Kingdom and the United States have started offering ‘hygge’ courses. There are also key words in the hygge manifesto collected by Meik Wiking, director of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen that highlight the concept, ten simple steps to find serenity in everyday life.

Here are the basic principles of hygge:
– atmosphere: dim the lights, light the candles;
– present: live here and now, turn off your mobile phone, enjoy the moment;
– pleasure: that which comes from simple things, like a cake, coffee, chocolate;
– equality: in conversation, in the division of tasks, the we must win out over the I. It is a concept that also applies to football: many coaches preach it in the locker room and in press conferences;
– gratitude: gratitude for the life one has and for what is yet to come;
– harmony: no family competition. Your loved ones love you as you are;
– comfort: take a break, enjoy relaxation;
– respite: no drama, no discussion. politics leave it for the next day;
– sharing: build bonds and memories ‘Do you still remember when…’;
– shelter: find a place of peace and security.
