The Pantone Color 2021

For the year 2021, Pantone has chosen a combination of two very special colours.

This year Pantone has chosen not one, but two colours, a grey (Ultimate Gray 17-5104) and a yellow (Illuminating 13-0647) as the combination of the year which has been defined and described as follows: “Concrete and firm, yet warm and optimistic, this colour combination conveys a sense of resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; it is something essential to the human mind.”

The choice of these two colours was not random. The famous academy of colour justifies the choice by stating that yellow and grey combined “instil light, energy and a desire for balance”, not surprisingly an expression that describes feelings and emotions close to the resilience and hope our minds need in a difficult and uncertain period caused by the pandemic.

So not just a trend but a real message of strength underlined by Pantone: “the combination of an Ultimate Gray, stable over time, and Illuminating Yellow, vibrant, expresses a message of positivity supported by a sense of strength.”

In addition, the contrast created by these two colours can make for some very interesting furnishings; grey is a popular choice for living spaces and can be described as ‘the new white’ and together with yellow forms a winning combination. The contrast between grey and yellow works well as a fresh, contemporary accent colour, creating a very modern atmosphere with warm, positive brushstrokes. The right dosage of colour, and yellow accessories should always be incorporated and integrated in the right measure.

It is recommended to use this colour combination for the living room, dining room or contract environments, avoiding the bedroom as it is not suitable for resting the eye and aiding sleep.

For more than 20 years, the Pantone Color of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in a variety of sectors, including fashion, home and industrial design, as well as packaging and graphic design, that is why anticipation is always high each year.
